I'M THE EYE OF THE STARRY NIGHT SKY,
SAILING THROUGH THE VAST OCEAN OF ETERNITY ECHOING HER VOICE,
CALL MY NAME WHENEVER YOU ARE LOST

Welcome to The Eye Dictionary, which was designed to help you understand and decipher the powerful symbolic imagery contained within the GAIA video.

Relax and read the text carefully turning this occasion into a meditative experience. Reflect on each symbolic image as you read its meaning forming the picture of the symbol in your mind's eye. This visualisation process can help you improve your meditation skills. Or, you can read this dictionary without the visualisation recommended and still benefit from an insight into the magical world of symbolic imagery.

Symbols are manifested through visual forms and images and often replace verbal language. In the GAIA video the symbolic images derive from ancient mythology where they are associated with gods, goddesses and represent natural and cosmic forces. Despite the passage of time these symbols are still an integral part of the fabric of life. We can choose to ignore them or allow them to inspire us to see and experience the magical realms of our lives on our beautiful blue planet.

Some useful tips on the nature of symbols
Click on each symbol and you will discover that they are all associated with the mythical aspects of Gaia. It is important to be conscious of the role of symbols in the visual arts, dance, film, music, media, therapy, and in spiritual and healing practices including meditation.

'In Taoist art there was nothing that was not symbolic and every symbol was a window onto a realm that is greater than the symbol itself and greater than the man who perceives it' (Cooper in Bartal and Ne'eman: 1993). A symbol can introduce and assume 'a mediatory or reflective role, between two states of reality - the tangible, identified as day-to-day existence or temporal and historical life, and the intangible, defined by the eternal realms of myths and archetypes' (Ibid.). When you make a connection with a symbol you become aware of a magical realm. You discover a kingdom that is greater than the symbol itself within your inner world or awareness. After that you find a precious treasure. The treasure is your private bank of inner knowledge providing stimulating data on the mythical aspects of your life. Connecting with symbolic imagery generates self-awareness and better understanding of your special gifts and talents.

Gaia was the name given to the pre-Hellenic goddess of creation. The Greek Delphic Oracle was also referred to as the 'naval of Gaia', the female creator, and is known for its particular call, which was inscribed on the walls of the Delphic Oracle, "KNOW THYSELF". Understanding the value of symbols, creating with symbols and meditating on symbols lead to Self-Knowledge.

Lila Moore compiled The Eye Dictionary on the basis of extracts taken from her PhD thesis.
